32. Goals rooted in identity

An abstract pattern resembling fingerprints

Introduction

As I set my goals for the coming year, I’m reminded of the cultural roots that have shaped who I am. My identity, forged through experiences in Congo, Uganda, and Canada, informs not only my sense of self but also the aspirations I hold for the future. Each goal I set is deeply connected to the values and lessons I’ve learned from these cultures, guiding me toward a year of growth that is both purposeful and meaningful.

Academic goals: pursuing knowledge with cultural insight

One of my primary goals for the next year is to return to university and pursue a degree in physics. This academic journey is not just about acquiring knowledge—it’s about connecting the scientific principles I learn with the cultural insights that have shaped my worldview. In Kinigi, Congo, I learned the importance of understanding the world around me, a lesson that continues to inspire my pursuit of physics.

In Uganda, my education was intertwined with faith, teaching me that the quest for knowledge is a spiritual journey as well. As I delve into the complexities of physics, I carry with me the curiosity and wonder that were nurtured in Kampala, where I first encountered the idea that science and spirituality can coexist. My goal is to bring this holistic perspective to my studies, approaching each concept with both intellectual rigor and cultural sensitivity.

Professional Goals: integrating cultural values into my career

Professionally, I’m focused on advancing in the skilled trades, with a particular emphasis on becoming a skilled millwright. This career path, while technical, is also deeply connected to the cultural values of resilience and community that I inherited from my Congolese and Ugandan backgrounds. In Kinigi, the community was built on the strength of its people, and in Kampala, faith and work were intertwined in daily life.

As I set out to achieve my professional goals, I’m committed to integrating these values into my work. Whether it’s through mentorship, collaboration, or contributing to the community, I aim to carry forward the principles of hard work, dedication, and service that have been passed down to me. My goal is to not only excel in my career but to do so in a way that honors my heritage and makes a positive impact on those around me.

Personal development goals: a year of growth grounded in identity

On a personal level, my goals for the next year include maintaining a consistent fitness routine and prioritizing my mental health. These goals are closely linked to the lessons I’ve learned from my cultural experiences. In Canada, I’ve seen the importance of balance and well-being, values that are essential to living a fulfilling life.

Fitness, for me, is not just about physical health—it’s a way to connect with my body and mind, to stay grounded in the present moment, much like the rituals and practices of my cultural heritage. Mental health, too, is a priority, as it influences every aspect of my life. By setting goals that promote overall well-being, I’m ensuring that my personal development is aligned with the values that define who I am.

Conclusion: a year of goals rooted in identity

As I look ahead to the next year, I’m committed to pursuing goals that are not only ambitious but also deeply rooted in my identity. My experiences in Congo, Uganda, and Canada have taught me the importance of understanding who I am and what I stand for. By grounding my goals in these cultural insights, I’m setting myself up for a year of purposeful growth—one that honors my past, enriches my present, and prepares me for a meaningful future.
